The first column below
suggests some questions that mentors might want to probe students on during
their initial intake interviews. The second column shows the outcome(s) (from the
outcomes rubric) to which the questions are tied and is meant to be used as
input (together with mentor probes of student answers to the student survey) to
the mentor's preliminary (pre-research) assessment of the student on the
relevant outcomes. Mentors could legitimately ignore some or all of these
questions and focus entirely on probing student answers to the student survey
as a way to develop preliminary assessments. Alternatively, mentors should be
encouraged to adapt these questions and/or add questions of their own devising,
provided
that they are explicit (and keep a record) about the relationship of each
question to one or more outcomes listed in the outcomes rubric.
